Absolutely brilliant. Thank you for the way you speak up for the fact that racism and the fight to keep people in a state of poverty in order to protect that wealthy class is basically behind EVERYTHING. Until we see THIS system, every other conversation is just missing the point.

This is about keeping people away from choice, away from the possibility of moving up in the world, away from seeing that their rights and freedoms are constantly being trampled upon by those who own the means of production.

This is not about children and it never, ever has been. If that were the case, people would be, as you stated, fighting for giving children a good LIFE - not just for them to be BORN.

Well done.

thank you so much for listening, aliyah! it's been distressing to see the masks come off post-election as some of their most pungent & odious foot soldiers start saying the quiet part out loud re: abortion

And just in general with the emboldening of hate...

You both are so fabulous. This podcast is the best thing about my Sunday mornings. I also have to say -- thank you so much for the point about how, putting ANY conditions on a woman's right to choose says something about how you view a woman as not rational enough or wise enough to make the best choice in the first place. That point just BLEW ME AWAY. I know I've known this in theory, but having it articulated this way breathed new life into how I can talk about this with all the cesspool of white right women I come from.

same, caro really cooked with that — feels like such a strong conversation ender

The Democrats not codifying Roe/not being abortion advocates has been one of my personal white whales and I am so grateful to hear it spelled out.

i had to take a long walk around the block after reading those democratic politician quotes aloud

This podcast episode is fantastic. I appreciate the research you both did to present our country's maddening political history of abortion. THANK YOU! I have been enlightened & am sharing it everywhere.

thank you so much for sharing! that's huge for podcasts that really have no other way to reach people since there's no "algorithm"

ah thank you Laura!

sidenote: absolutely. yes. FUCK the filibuster. I'm in awe listening to pregnancy/abortion framed this way (the correct way), and I totally understand now why I get the looks I get anytime I engage with people in my real life on this topic lol. My views on it are radical 🫠😆

Expand full comment

and they shouldn't be radical! that's the crazy thing. i think the more people we have framing the issue this way with one another and winning the messaging war, the easier it will become to put pressure on politicians (assuming we get to have elections again! ha! ha! ha!)

This is my roman empire social justice/feminist/human rights issue. This is the hill I'll die on every time. You know who the only person I've ever heard of having a true "post-birth abortion" was??? Jesus... lmao. The fictional diety who sacrificed his 33 y/o son for our sins. Like it's so unserious, I'll truly never understand the lack of critical thought there. Abortion=bad but their God literally let his own son die for the sins of the world and that is good? 🥴 Fuck anyone "pro life" in 2024. I'm so tired.

Love love. I’m grateful that I have learned so much about abortion rights over the past few years despite growing up very religious. In high school I even volunteered a couple times at a “pregnancy care center” right across the street from a legit clinic. What I DIDN’T know was how badly our democratic leaders have failed reproductive justice. And the morality of abortion is the best next conversation. So grateful for you ladies and for Jessica Valenti.

Thank you guys again for an amazing episode that truly blasted open my eyes! I think I honestly had no idea how fucked up so much of the left sides perspectives on abortion are. Those Hilary Clinton quotes made my head explode. This is so so so important and omg I am so nervous for Tues, but this pod gave me a bit of hope that Kamala could move us truly forward with this!!

I so so appreciated this episode! I think too often what gets lost in these conversations is the defensive nature of “well in these extreme circumstances maybe we can have a little abortion, if we are good” (in cases of rape, incest, etc) - but no, it should simply be a right for all: safe, legal, & free ;)

If you’re at all interested in some Marxist feminist work on this, I highly recommend Jenny Brown’s work. Her work: “Birth Strike: The Hidden Fight over Women's Work” and “Without Apology: The Abortion Struggle Now” changed my brain chemistry

Thank you!

I love your podcast. I am a privileged, ignorant white lady who voted for Kamala solely because of abortion. My husband - who I just had our first child with 2 months ago - crossed the aisle for the first time and voted for DJT. I don't know how to articulate how devastating this is to me. He says DJT will not infringe on reproductive rights. He claims it doesn't matter what JD Vance thinks about women and that it will continue to be a state-decided issue and if Biden can't change that - how could Kamala? We both don't know how to find quotes on abortion to find out what DJT actually plans to do in office. You are both more educated and well-researched than me. How do I talk about this with my husband? Sorry I know the comment section isn't an advice column...

Hi Kendall- apologies for the delay, but I wanted to make sure that when I replied to you, I had time to give your question the thought and compassion you deserve. I'm sure it's a hard week right now in your household, and I'm sorry for that. I'm not going to tell you how to manage your marriage, because that is deeply personal. But I will say two things:

1) i empathize with what you said here: "We both don't know how to find quotes on abortion to find out what DJT actually plans to do in office." These political parties are often intentionally abstract in regards to how they plan to abolish or save a policy, and that is by design. It's a bit too late for this to sway your husband's vote, but for your info: the Trump administration will likely facilitate a federal abortion ban, and then expand into bans on contraceptives/reproductive health medical care, and so forth. At the state level, states are about to become much more draconian as well - to your husband, you could explain that this goes well beyond abortion care, and into miscarriage care, uterine care, sexual health education, contraceptive availability, child support, and more. In short: it's bad.

2) I don't share your conflict with a spouse, but I do share it with multiple people in my life that I love deeply. It's been an ongoing challenge for me, figuring out how to stand by my convictions and also hold space for people that have unimaginable stances, but who are important enough to me that I can't imagine not having them in my life. My only advice to you in this front is this: the more work I do in my own life, from working on this podcast to supporting organizations financially to learning more about the progressive movement, the less I worry about what the small handful of people in my life think. I'm not sure I'm capable of changing their lives anyways, and I know I can make a difference on a much larger level if I focus in different areas. All of which is to say: you deserve to have a community where people support your political beliefs. If that's your spouse, that's great. If it's a group chat with close friends, that's wonderful too. If it's a group of progressive people who meet weekly at your local coffee shop, that's just as good. Find your people. Figure out the situation that fits for your life, and take care of yourself in whatever way is best. You know what's best for your life, spiritually/financially/socially.

Sending love-

Thank you for such a thoughtful and thorough reply. I've been doing a lot of compartmentalizing lately and I am very tired. I am so appreciative of the work that you and Katie do!

kendall, i also wanted to tell you that i've gotten more than one panicked email this week from women who are in your *exact same shoes* and feel incredibly lonely in their communities in deep red states. there are so many people in this position, and some of my deepest friendships with other progressives have happened online (like me and caro! we've literally never met irl! lol). i have half a mind to put y'all in a group chat with one another...

Luckily I live in a blue state (and my husband's ballot didn't count, apparently, because his signature didn't match lol..he said it was a west coast conspiracy) so he's the outlier in my life. But I'd be down for a diabolical lies fangirl group chat! It's so wild the two of you have never met!

You could let him know that "leaving it up to the states" was the same argument made by racists in order to be able to uphold slavery so... maybe ask him why he thinks that way.
